Aeri Kim | Backstage Project
Aeri and I met at the S-Bahn station Hackescher Markt. I waited upstairs and she downstairs. The funny thing is, I thought I had seen her leaving the train but then she was gone all the sudden. I thought it was funny because I thought I had seen somebody who might be a ballet dancer by the way she moved, not because I recognized her face. One of the side effects of this project seems to be that I learn something about ballet :-) Aeri had been shopping and presented herself i

Cam Proust | Backstage Project
We had picked a pretty hot day for our shooting. The shooting with Cam should bring some changes for the concept in several ways: The first two shootings were indoor, directly at the Staatsoper Berlin. But the locations within the Staatsoper were limited for us and shooting outside was a nice alternative. I also decided to use a "faster" but certainly analog camera, my Nikon F4. And last but not least we shot both styles, with Tutu and a summer dress. And for the future I dec

Yuliya Golitsina | Backstage Project
Yuliya is the the second member of the Staatsballett Berlin who was kind enough to do a shooting with me. I am still full of admiration when I see what ballet dancer are able to do. And I enjoy it even more since I am allowed to be so close with my camera(s). I very much remember Yuliya when I saw her dancing the Arabic Dance in Tchaikowsky´s Nutcracker some weeks ago. I was so impressed. It was her and the Arab Dance which "inspired" me to do this project. Because I wanted t

Patricia Zhou | Backstage Project
I met Patricia Zhou from the Staatsballett the other day and shot a couple of photos of her while she got ready for the show that evening. The closest I ever got to a ballet dancer so far was when I shot photos from the nutcracker last month: about 25m away from the stage, together with quite a few other press people. So this was quite different. I guess I don´ have to explain that I really enjoyed talking to and shooting Patricia that day and I hope that we´l have the chance

The Nutcracker
This series is from my first ballet shooting: Tchaikowsky´s The Nutcracker at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. And I really enjoyed this assignment. The performance was great, the opera house is great and the people were friendly and things went smoothly. The only thing that could be better was the position us press people had: it was row 20 or backwards and one could hardly change the perspective. But - das Leben ist kein Wunschkonzert and I think it could have hardly gone better w

Finsternis
These photos were taken in February 2016, when Philine Rinnert, Gerhild Steinbuch, Sebastian Straub and Christoph Bernewitz were doing a test run of Finsternis which was performed a couple of days later at the Theaterdiscounter in Berlin.
